At least one person has lost their life and seven others have been injured after the explosion of a tanker truck that triggered a serious traffic accident in the Iranian province of Kurdistan, located in the northwest of the country, according to local authorities.
The incident occurred on an interurban road that connects the county of Sanandaj, in Kurdistan, with the county of Hamedan, in the homonymous province, as explained by the head of regional medical services, Babak Hodaei, in statements broadcast by the Iranian state channel, IRIB.
Hodaei detailed that the explosion would have caused the fire of several vehicles that were circulating in the vicinity, and added that emergency teams have immediately evacuated the injured to a hospital in Sarandaj.
Rescue efforts continue to be active in the area, according to information provided by state television.
Meanwhile, the president of Iran, Masud Pezeshkian, has lamented the "tragic incident" and emphasized that the loss of lives is "a cause of deep sorrow," according to a message disseminated through social media.
"We express our condolences to the affected families and to the people of Kurdistan," he stated, before highlighting that "the competent authorities must prioritize immediate care for the injured, provide support to the families, and conduct a thorough investigation into the causes of the accident."
