At least five people have died and several others have been injured after shots fired by an individual who opened fire indiscriminately from a car in the Polish city center of Kraków.

"Five people have died and several more are injured in the Main Market Square incident. The person responsible has been shot by Police officers and is being taken to the hospital right now. There are emergency services working at the scene," the Police said in a statement.

The incident unfolded around 15:00, when a man arrived at the market square in a vehicle and began shooting without distinguishing targets. "The person responsible has been detained. There are injured people, including Police officers," the Police said at first.

The Kraków City Hall has asked local residents and visitors "not to approach the area where the Police and emergency services are working."

The Minister of the Interior, Waldemar Zurek, has described what happened as an "enormous tragedy" in the Market Square. "My thoughts are with the families and loved ones of the victims of this unimaginable tragedy," he said.

Zurek confirmed that the attacker is injured and in custody. "Prosecutors, police, and all services are already on site collecting evidence and investigating the circumstances of the attack. The State is functioning. We ask for calm and not to hinder the work of the emergency services. The person responsible for this crime will be brought before justice," he added.

For his part, Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said on social media that he is closely following the situation after the "tragic shooting." "The Police are investigating the background and all the circumstances of the attack," he said.
