The spokesperson for the Secretary-General of the United Nations, Stéphane Dujarric, stated this Thursday that the UN has already examined the report that claims the United States may have committed war crimes in several bombings carried out in Iran. Dujarric described the conclusions of the document as "shocking" and demanded accountability for the events detailed in the dossier.
"Of course we are fully aware of this report, which was published by an independent commission. I think its conclusions are, at a minimum, shocking," the spokesperson said at a press conference when questioned about the work of the International Affairs Commission on the U.S. Department of Defense.
In the same appearance, António Guterres' representative insisted on the need to demand "accountability," while emphasizing "the importance of these reports and the need for people to cooperate with them."
Dujarric's words come after a UN investigation commission made public this Thursday a report concluding that there are "reasonable grounds" to consider that the United States committed war crimes in two airstrikes launched against a school and a sports center during the early phases of the offensive that began in February alongside Israel against Iran.
After the document was made known, the White House responded by attacking the UN Human Rights Council, stating that it "has been spouting nonsense for decades," and defending that "the only party in this conflict that has committed war crimes is the Iranian regime, which has killed thousands of its citizens."
The Human Rights Council, composed of 47 member states, is scheduled to formally receive the report next Monday for its examination.
