Eight divers were injured this Wednesday, two of them seriously, after an incident recorded at the Navy Diving Center, located at the Naval Station of La Algameca, in Cartagena, according to the institution itself.
In an official note, the Navy explained that the event occurred early in the morning in a hyperbaric chamber of the center. For the moment, the specific causes of the accident are unknown and an internal investigation has been initiated to determine what happened.
Of those affected, five remain with minor injuries under medical observation, two others have a reserved prognosis, and one of the divers has already been discharged. The Navy has emphasized that its "main concern" is the evolution and health status of the eight members involved.
The Navy Diving Center is the facility specialized in underwater operations of the institution and acts as a reference center for the Armed Forces both in these activities and in health matters related to diving. It has a staff of about 90 people, mostly professional divers.
Among its most relevant tasks are the maintenance of the living work of the ships of the Cartagena arsenal, with afloat repair work that includes plugging, placement of anodes, and cleaning of suction systems, among other technical interventions.
