The Secretary of State of the United States, Marco Rubio, has taken advantage of his stay this Wednesday in Greece to chain new praises for the achievements of Western civilization, with the intention of encouraging Europe to abandon its "lethargy," in line with the usual discourse that the Trump Administration directs at the Old Continent.
With the Acropolis of Athens as a backdrop, Rubio has concluded a visit focused on closing agreements in defense and energy with the Greek government, before heading to Portugal, the last stop of a European tour that began this same week in Iceland.
"We believe that Europe can awaken from its long lethargy and rekindle the fire that was lit here millennia ago," Rubio has stated, known for his strong rejection of European multiculturalism and for denouncing the persecution that, in his opinion, some governments exercise against ultraconservative values.
Rubio has urged attendees to "marvel" at what has been achieved by "their ancestors." "The history of our civilization is the greatest story ever known to man. And it began here, with the first men and women of the West. From them, we can rediscover the virtues, the courage, and the strength to confront the dangers we face in our time," he has pointed out.
"Nations do not need to abandon their distinct identities to recognize their common interests," the Secretary of State has concluded, reinforcing his call for a united Europe around a shared cultural heritage.
