The Thai authorities have updated this Wednesday the death toll from the severe floods recorded in mid-September, raising the figure to 60 deceased and counting millions of people affected throughout the country.
The heavy rains completely covered some areas of Bangkok, the capital, although at this moment the water level has notably decreased. However, the situation continues to be especially complicated in the central province of Prachinburi, where 19 deaths have been recorded.
The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation detailed in a statement that the overflowing of several rivers caused flooding in seven districts of that province, with a direct impact on about 188,000 people.
For now, the waters continue to be present in 27 of the 77 provinces of the country. At the same time, the authorities have deployed extensive cleaning operations as Thailand prepares to host the meetings of the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund, scheduled for next week.
The Prime Minister, Anutin Charnvirakul, has ordered in recent days the various government agencies to coordinate their actions regarding the floods and in transportation matters in order to avoid interruptions during those meetings.
