The death toll from the landslide recorded more than a week ago in the Chinese municipality of Chongqing, in the central part of the country and caused by intense rainfall, has risen to 41, after local authorities confirmed new fatalities.
The rescue command center of the affected county, which is administratively dependent on the city of Chongqing, reported this Tuesday that another 30 deaths directly linked to the landslide have been counted, as detailed by the Chinese state agency Xinhua.
With this latest data, the total number of deceased stands at 41, after authorities communicated last Thursday that eleven fatalities and 50 missing persons had been recorded. For the moment, rescue teams have not updated how many citizens remain unaccounted for.
The landslide caused the collapse of nearly a dozen residential buildings, which forced the evacuation of more than 1,100 neighbors from the area and mobilized more than 800 rescue personnel for search and assistance efforts.
The Ministry of Emergency Management has launched a aid package worth 50 million yuan (about 6.5 million euros) aimed at supporting residents affected by the disaster.
