The President of Serbia, Aleksandar Vucic, has hinted this Sunday that he is seriously considering the option of resigning "shortly", while downplaying the scope of the university protests against his government held on Saturday night in Belgrade, which concluded with 23 arrests and various material damages.

"It is possible that I will present my resignation shortly," Vucic declared, as reported by the N1 channel, during an official visit to China that will last from this Sunday, May 24, until the 28th. Despite this, his term as head of state does not conclude until the year 2027.

Immediately after, the Serbian leader referred to the student mobilizations that took place in Slavija Square in Belgrade, which he described as "empty," poorly attended, and with messages that, in his opinion, were not "well designed."

It is worth remembering that the student movement has been in a standoff with the Executive since November 2024, following the collapse of a canopy at the Novi Sad train station, an accident in which 16 people died. Unsatisfied with the government's reaction, thousands of young people took to the streets en masse and even forced the resignation of the then prime minister —and former mayor of Novi Sad—, Milos Vucevic, in April of last year.
