The president of the United States, Donald Trump, suggested this Tuesday changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, in a context of strong trade tension with Canada due to Washington's plan to impose new tariffs on its northern neighbor.
"The United States is seriously considering changing the name of Lake Ontario to Lake America, as we do not expect to continue doing much business with Ontario," the U.S. president stated in a message posted on his social network.
The statement comes amid confrontation between Washington and Ottawa following the failure of the latest rounds of trade dialogue between the two countries and at a time when Trump insists that he will increase tariffs on automobiles, trucks, automotive parts, and steel from Canada by up to 50% starting January 1, 2027.
On the part of the United States, Vice President JD Vance emphasized that Canadians "depend" on the U.S. economy, which is why he defended the announced tariff measures in order to "impose fair rules" and "force Canadians to sit at the table and give U.S. companies the same treatment they give their own companies."
