The United States Army has reported a new airstrike against positions of the jihadist group Al Shabaab, affiliated with Al Qaeda, in northern Somalia. On this occasion, the target was "a weapons warehouse" located in the Sanaag region, with no data communicated yet about possible casualties.
According to details provided by the United States Africa Command (AFRICOM) in an official statement, the operation took place on Thursday "in coordination with the federal government of Somalia," and the target was located approximately 80 kilometers southwest of the city of Bosaso.
AFRICOM has not clarified whether the bombing caused deaths or injuries among the ranks of the insurgent organization, although it emphasized that "it continues to act alongside the federal government and the Armed Forces of Somalia to degrade Al Shabaab's capabilities to threaten U.S. forces and citizens."
In the last week, U.S. Armed Forces have acknowledged at least four attacks against the extremist group in different parts of the African country, in support of operations by the Somali Army backed by local clans and militias, as part of the strategy promoted by the President of Somalia, Hasán Sheij Mohamud.
