The representatives of the organizations calling for the general strike on November 11 present this Monday, October 19, the mobilizations at the Ministry of Labor and Social Economy registry. The event is scheduled for 11:00 a.m. at the main entrance of the department, at Paseo de la Castellana, 63, in Madrid.

The call brings together CCOO, UGT, CGT, CNT, Union of Actors and Actresses, CO.BAS, Intersindical, and the Confederation of Tenant Unions. After the joint presentation, their representatives will attend to the media in turns.

The general secretaries of CCOO, Unai Sordo; UGT, Pepe Álvarez; CGT, Miguel Fadrique; CNT, Nieves Román, and Union of Actors and Actresses, Juanjo Artero, will participate. Andrea Zayas from the state leadership of CO.BAS; a spokesperson from Intersindical; and Valeria Racu, spokesperson for the Confederation of Tenant Unions, will also speak.

Inflation and housing, in the background of the call

The mobilization comes after the definitive CPI for September stood at 4.9% year-on-year, with energy and fuels as the main drivers. The underlying inflation, which excludes the most volatile components, rose to 3.1%.

The energy price increase also transferred to other consumer products: unprocessed foods recorded an annual increase of 5.8%. In parallel, the wages agreed in the collective agreement have accumulated seven consecutive months with increases lower than inflation, which reduces the purchasing power of workers.

The access to housing constitutes another reason for the call for this general strike. 43.6% of tenants are at risk of poverty, and the increase in prices particularly hinders access to housing for young people with jobs.

Among the demands included in this context are salary increases above inflation, wage guarantee clauses, and housing supplements in pressured areas, as well as a 7% increase in the interprofessional minimum wage by 2027.
