Elecciones generales del 29 de noviembre · Demócrata

The president of the Government and PSOE candidate for re-election, Pedro Sánchez, resumed election pre-campaigning this Sunday with an event at the Palacio Euskalduna in Bilbao. Before around 2,800 people, according to figures provided by the party, he asked for the vote «en masse» for the general elections on next 29 November and defended the continuity of a progressive Government over the next four years.

The engagement marks the resumption of Socialist pre-election activity after the party suspended its events following the Urda rail accident (Toledo). Sánchez was accompanied by the general secretary of the PSE-EE, Eneko Andueza; the Socialist spokesperson in Congress and top of the ticket for Bizkaia, Patxi López, and the Bilbao councillor Nora Abete.

Commitments on pensions and the minimum wage

During his address, Sánchez committed to increasing the interprofessional minimum wage (SMI) every year and to entrenching in the Constitution the adjustment of pensions. The Socialist candidate argued that social gains and the economic growth of recent years can continue during the next legislative term.

The president presented the elections as an opportunity to extend those policies and warned that a possible Government of PP and Vox would, in his view, «reaction and cuts».

Criticism of Feijóo and Abascal

Sánchez has also directed his criticism at the leaders of the PP and Vox. About Alberto Núñez Feijóo, he has mocked that «it’s not more sad because he doesn’t want to» and has questioned his ability to oppose the decisions of the US president, Donald Trump.

In that sense, he has mentioned the commitment of the NATO countries to raise defense spending to 5% of GDP and has stated that both Feijóo and Santiago Abascal «will swallow everything». He has also argued that decisions about Spain should not be made from Washington, Tel Aviv, Buenos Aires, or Moscow.

The event falls within the pre-campaign agenda of the parties ahead of the elections on November 29, on a day in which the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, also took part in a meeting in Málaga together with the president of Andalusia, Juanma Moreno.
