The president of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, has claimed in New York the results of his economic and migration policies applied in these years in La Moncloa, emphasizing that "they work" during an event with the New York mayor, the Democrat Zohran Mamdani, with whom he has shown a clear ideological harmony.
The meeting was held at Gracie Mansion, the official residence of the mayor, and also included the participation of the Prime Minister of Barbados, Mia Motley. In this context, Sánchez defended his economic model, which he attributes to several consecutive years of growth, job creation, and a reduction in social inequality, all accompanied by a robust social protection system.
The head of the Executive cited some emblematic measures as examples, including the increase of the minimum wage by up to 66% in total, the labor reform that has provided "new rights" to workers, and the "massive investment" in the green transition.
He recalled that his Governments maintained this course despite warnings from conservative sectors that predicted a failure of these policies, and emphasized that time has proven the opposite. "Our policies work and are aimed at ordinary people because social justice is not the enemy of economic growth," he stated.
In relation to the inflationary crises arising from the war in Russia in Ukraine and the current conflict in the Middle East, Sánchez justified the adoption of interventionist measures, such as the subsidy for public transport, the tax reduction on food and energy, or the extraordinary levies on banks and electric companies. "Because those who have more, must contribute more," he insisted.
According to him, this set of decisions has allowed Spain to be among the economies that have advanced the most in recent years, while unemployment remains at lows not seen in two decades.
In the migration field, Sánchez has assured that "migration has made Spain stronger" in economic, social, and cultural terms. He defended that migrant people sustain a good part of the productive fabric, contribute resources to public coffers, and help preserve the Welfare State.
"Migration makes us a better country, without a doubt," he reiterated, emphasizing that these workers must have decent wages, access to affordable housing, quality public services, and "security, dignity, and future."
Mamdani praises Sánchez's model
For his part, Mamdani has dedicated extensive recognition to the policies promoted by Sánchez, particularly highlighting the increase in the minimum wage, which in his view conveys to workers the message that their effort and dignity "matter."
"That commitment to the dignity of working people guides us all here this morning and has guided the work of Prime Minister Sánchez," he pointed out, also highlighting the extension of paternity leave approved by the Executive.
The New York mayor has also valued the ban on conversion therapies aimed at homosexuals and Sánchez's support for Palestine, as well as its recognition as a state.
