The President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, stated this Wednesday that the Executive will investigate to the last consequences the causes of the railway accident that has caused at least 68 deaths in the province of Toledo, pointing to possible errors and deficiencies in the security system.
"If there have been negligence, it will be known and if there have been failures in the security system, it will be responded to with total firmness," he stressed from the advanced command post installed in the area of the accident in Urda (Toledo), in a statement without a question period.
Sánchez emphasized that "it is not acceptable" for a country like Spain to record two railway accidents —the one this Wednesday and the one that occurred last January in Adamuz (Córdoba)— and reiterated his commitment to strengthening security to restore confidence in the railway network.
"If we must further strengthen security to rebuild confidence in our high-speed system, it will be done, because what is not acceptable for a country like Spain is to suffer two high-speed railway accidents in the same year," he stated alongside the president of Castilla La Mancha, Emiliano García Page.
The head of the Executive has assured that "all of Spain is in mourning" and has announced that the Government will decree three days of official mourning starting this Thursday.
