The Spanish Government has expressed its rejection of the missile attacks launched by Iran in the early hours of Wednesday against Jordanian territory and has called for an immediate end to the violence in light of "the risk of escalation."
In a statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Spain has conveyed its "full solidarity" to the Kingdom of Jordan, to its Government, and to the population of the country. At the same time, it has reiterated its "strongest support for its sovereignty, territorial integrity, and security."
The Government considers that these military actions significantly increase the possibilities of an escalation in the Middle East and represent "a flagrant violation of the United Nations Charter and international law."
In the statement, the Ministry emphasizes that "only negotiation and diplomacy will ensure lasting peace and stability in the region."
During the early hours of Wednesday, the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps of Iran reported a missile attack against a U.S. hangar located at the Al Azraq military base in Jordan, as well as against two U.S. destroyers, presented as a response to the "aggressive actions" of the United States against "Iranian tankers and ships."
On the other hand, the Jordanian Armed Forces confirmed having been "the target, in recent hours, of a missile attack coming from Iranian territory." According to their data, of the "20 ballistic missiles launched towards Jordanian territory," "18 have been intercepted and successfully destroyed," thus limiting the scope of the attack.
