The main candidate of IU for the general elections on November 29 and coordinator of the Andalusian federation, Toni Valero, will occupy the third position on the Frente Amplio list for the Madrid constituency, as confirmed by the organization.
His candidacy joins the numbers one and two already announced by the capital, the leaders of Más Madrid Emilio Delgado and Tesh Sidi, respectively. Meanwhile, the Minister of Health, Mónica García, has decided not to integrate into the candidacy for the general elections in order to focus on the regional elections of 2027, in which she will head the Más Madrid list.
Valero, a secondary education teacher, was supported by a wide majority, with 77.4% of the votes, in the internal primaries of IU to choose its main electoral reference for the general elections, with the expectation that he would later integrate into the Frente Amplio.
This role as the main reference of IU in these elections has been decisive in placing him finally on the Madrid list of Frente Amplio, according to various sectors of this political space. Those sources emphasize that Movimiento Sumar, which designated its co-coordinator Verónica Barbero as its electoral reference figure, will have the fourth place on the Madrid candidacy.
On the other hand, IU has stated that with this decision it "reinforces its presence" in the new political project of Frente Amplio, which it has promoted in recent months together with Más Madrid, IU, and Movimiento Sumar.
IU emphasizes the "federal dimension" of its bet on Madrid
The presence of the Andalusian leader on the Congress list for Madrid also highlights the "federal dimension of IU and its participation in a Frente Amplio that already brings together nearly a dozen organizations from different territorial areas.
Valero has been a deputy this legislature in the Sumar parliamentary group, elected by the Málaga constituency. Before taking on institutional positions, he worked for years as a teacher in several public high schools, a career that has marked his involvement in the defense of education and public services.
In addition, he has a "broad political and organizational trajectory" within IU, a formation he has been a member of since he was young and in which he has held various roles, including the coordination of IU Andalucía since 2019.
In the coming days, more candidates from IU will be added, who will also hold relevant positions on the Frente Amplio lists for Congress and the Senate in different territories.
