The City Council of Avilés has organized the San Agustín Gala 2026 as recognition of the Asturian livestock sector and, in particular, to the professionals who for years have participated in the historic Livestock Fair of Avilés, highlighting their effort, dedication, and commitment to livestock activity.
This August, the 142nd edition of this fair, considered the oldest in Spain, should have taken place. However, the City Council of Avilés and representatives of the sector decided to postpone it due to the precautionary measures in place to safeguard the Asturian bovine herd against contagious nodular dermatitis (CND), which involve the suspension of fairs, contests, competitions, auctions, markets, and other gatherings that imply the concentration of bovine livestock.
The San Agustín Gala 2026 took place at the La Magdalena Exhibition Pavilion, where more than 200 people gathered, including representatives of the Asturian livestock sector and authorities from the Principality and the local area.
Among the attendees were the mayor of Avilés, Mariví Monteserín; the Government delegate, Adriana Lastra; the vice president of the General Board of the Principality, Celia Fernández; the councilor of Finance of Siero, Raimundo Díaz; the mayors of Gozón, Jorge Suárez García, and Piloña, Iván Allende Toraño; the mayor of Las Regueras, María Isabel Méndez Ramos, and the councilor of Markets of the City Council of Avilés, Raquel Ruiz.
Throughout the event, professional trajectories, generational change, conservation, and various forms of contribution to the Asturian livestock sector were valued, highlighting the role of the different generations linked to the sector and the San Agustín Fair itself.
As a commemorative gesture, a handcrafted and hand-engraved livestock rod was given to all attendees. The day was completed with a performance by the group of pandereteras Serendengue.
