The bishop of Jaén, Sebastián Chico, has brought to Pope León XIV a sample of the first extra virgin olive oil (AOVE) milled in the province in the current campaign.

The delivery took place at the General Audience this Wednesday in St. Peter’s Square in the Vatican. In the turn of greetings to the bishops after the audience, Sebastián Chico conveyed to the Holy Father the affection, closeness and prayer of the entire Church of Jaén for his person, for his recovery after his recent surgical intervention and for his ministry at the head of the universal Church.

Within the Pastoral Visit that he is carrying out to the Arciprestazgo de Mágina, the bishop from Jaén went a few days ago to the Cooperativa Nuestra Señora de los Remedios de Jimena (Jaén), located in the very heart of Sierra Mágina, where the extra virgin olive oil Oro de Cánava is produced.

As a consequence of that visit and as a sign of affection and gratitude, the prelate has offered the Pontiff a sample of this oil, corresponding to the first day of harvest of the new campaign.

With this gesture, the bishop of Jaén has wanted to present to the Pope "one of the most prized fruits of the province, symbol of the effort and dedication of so many families who live from olive growing".

"Speaking of olive cultivation in Jaén is speaking of the history of this land, of our roots and of our own identity. Because the olive tree is part of our landscape, but also of our way of living, working and understanding life," the bishop from Jaén has pointed out.

In addition, Sebastián Chico has taken advantage of the audience with León XIV to express his gratitude to him for the granting of plenary indulgences on the occasion of the Diocesan Jubilee Year, which the Church of Jaén celebrates for the VIII Centenary of the Apparition of the Blessed Virgin of la Cabeza.
