The former president of PP-A Javier Arenas has been confirmed this week as president of the Senate Regulation Committee, while the former president of the Junta de Andalucía Susana Díaz retains the position of second vice president of the Committee of Requests. In addition, two of the nine senators designated by the Andalusian Parliament who took possession of their seats in the Upper House last Tuesday --Jesús Aguirre and Francisco Javier Oblaré, both from PP-- will also assume a vice presidency in respective committees.
After the regional elections held on May 17, the Plenary of the Andalusian Parliament elected on July 23 the nine senators by regional designation corresponding to the beginning of the XIII legislature. Of them, four were proposed by PP-A --to which five corresponded, but ceded one to Vox by virtue of the government pact between both formations--, specifically Javier Arenas, Jesús Aguirre, Virginia Pérez, and Francisco Javier Oblaré; three belong to PSOE-A --María Jesús Montero, Susana Díaz, and Juan Espadas--, and two come from Vox, Álvaro Zancajo and María Auxiliadora Pastor.
In the Plenary held on Tuesday, September 8, the nine mentioned senators swore or promised their position, although three of them --Javier Arenas, Juan Espadas, and Susana Díaz-- were already part of the Upper House in the previous legislature, also as senators designated by the Parliament of Andalucía.
Currently, Juan Espadas serves as spokesperson for the Socialist Group in the Senate, and from now on will have his successor in the General Secretariat of PSOE-A, María Jesús Montero, as deputy spokesperson. The same function of deputy spokesperson is performed in the Popular Group by the former president of PP-A and former minister Javier Arenas, who also heads the Regulation Committee, a responsibility he resumed on Wednesday, September 9, and which he had already held between October 2023 and July of this year, according to his senator profile consulted by Europa Press.
Likewise, Susana Díaz has been confirmed as second vice president of the Committee of Requests, a position she had already held between October 2023 and July of this year 2026. The committee itself re-elected her in a session held on Tuesday the 8th, in which she was the only candidate to fill the vacancy generated in that vice presidency after the start of the new Andalusian legislature.
In parallel, the Defense commission appointed the former president of the Andalusian Parliament Jesús Aguirre (PP) as the first vice president in a meeting also called for last Tuesday, in replacement of the also 'popular' Luis Rogelio Rodríguez-Comendador, who has ceased to be a senator after the regional elections on May 17.
Finally, the senator of the PP elected by the Andalusian Parliament Francisco Javier Oblaré has also taken on a first vice presidency of the commission; specifically, that of Public Function, at the proposal of the Popular Group, which has a majority in that body. His appointment was agreed upon in a session held on September 8, in which he obtained 26 favorable votes and two abstentions, according to the Diario de Sesiones consulted by Europa Press.
