The president of the Parliament of Canarias, Astrid Pérez, held this week at the headquarters of the regional Chamber an institutional meeting with a delegation from the Chamber of Representatives of Uruguay, organized on the occasion of the 300th anniversary of the arrival of the first Canarians in Uruguay, dated 1726.
Also taking part in the reception was Patricia Hernández, second secretary of the Board of the Parliament of Canarias. The Uruguayan representation was made up of the deputy María Inés Obaldía and the deputies Mariano Tucci, Juan Martín Rodríguez, Nicolás Viera and Conrado Rodríguez.
Also attending the event was Eduardo Carlos Mullín, promoter of the commemorative project, a Uruguayan citizen residing in Canarias and descendant of those first emigrants, who came accompanied by his son, Eduardo Santiago Mullín, as the parliamentary institution has noted in a press release.
Throughout the meeting, the relevance of this anniversary was underscored, which highlights the historical and human ties that connect Canarias and Uruguay for three hundred years, through migratory movements and the contribution of successive generations of Canarian origin to Uruguayan society.
Within the framework of the event, the Uruguayan delegation presented the president of the Parliament with a commemorative plaque for the anniversary. In addition, its members signed the honor book of the regional Chamber, leaving record of this official visit.
The reception is part of the commemorative activities for the 300 years of the arrival of the first Canarians to Uruguay, an anniversary that recalls the shared history between both territories and highlights the cultural, social and family ties that have been preserved throughout the centuries.
