The Government of Ceuta has expressed its rejection of the aggression suffered this Sunday by the Assembly member Julia Alejandra Ferreras in the vicinity of the Port. At the same time, it has indicated that it "understands" the fatigue of the Ceuta population in the face of the situation generated by the massive entry of migrants, but has emphasized that "violence is not the alternative."
Both the Autonomous City and the Government Delegation in Ceuta have expressed their condemnation of the attack against the parliamentarian, after a group of protesters shook the car in which she was traveling with others, according to her party, Ceuta Ya!, after confusing them with members of the Navarrese collective Negu Gorriak/Derecho a Techo.
In separate statements, both administrations have conveyed their solidarity and support to Ferreras and the other occupants of the vehicle, while rejecting any manifestation of violence as a response to the crisis that the city is experiencing.
The City Government has stated that it understands the "fatigue," the "concern," the "indignation," and even the "frustration" of many Ceutíes in the current context, as well as the existence of episodes that may be interpreted as "provocations." Likewise, it has defended the right of citizens to demonstrate and demand solutions for Ceuta.
However, the local Executive has warned that there is "a line that we must never cross" and has insisted that "violence is not an alternative." "No cause, however legitimate it may be; no claim, however just it may seem; and no provocation can justify an aggression," it has emphasized.
The regional government has reiterated that it will continue to defend the interests of Ceuta and demand responses from the different administrations, but has insisted that this pressure must be exercised "within the law, respect, and coexistence."
"Violence does not strengthen our claims; it weakens them," the City has emphasized, calling for maintaining calm and channeling social discontent through democratic means. "Ceuta defends itself firmly, with unity and within the law," concludes the statement.
Coexistence, an essential pillar in Ceuta
For its part, the Government Delegation has conveyed its "strongest condemnation" of the aggression against Ferreras, whose vehicle was, as detailed, "stoned and hit" by several people gathered near the port.
The Delegation has insisted that, regardless of the causes or reasons that drive citizens to take to the streets, violence "can never constitute a legitimate form of expression or protest."
Likewise, it has reminded that the exercise of the rights of assembly and demonstration, protected by the legal system, is incompatible with any type of aggression against people or property. In this sense, it has defended coexistence as one of the fundamental values of the city.
"Coexistence has been, and must continue to be, the hallmark that defines Ceuta," the Delegation has emphasized, highlighting that the city has been built on mutual respect, plurality, and understanding among its inhabitants.
