The key is in the position of each locality within the totality band: the closer it is to the center of the strip, the longer the Sun will remain completely hidden.

In practical terms, the total phase will last from just a few seconds at the edges of the band to around a minute and a half in several well-situated capitals and municipalities. It will not be a long darkness, but a brief, intense moment very conditioned by the exact place of observation.

What “duration of totality” means

When talking about how long the eclipse lasts, one must distinguish between the complete eclipse and the totality. The entire phenomenon begins when the Moon starts to cover part of the Sun and ends when it stops covering it. That process can last for more than an hour.

The totality, on the other hand, is the most awaited moment: the instant when the Moon completely hides the Sun and the day visibly darkens. That phase will last only a few seconds or minutes, depending on the city.

Duration of the total eclipse in various cities

The expected durations show great differences between observation points. In A Coruña, the totality will be approximately 1 minute and 17 seconds. In Bilbao, it will be much shorter, at about 31 seconds. In Zaragoza, the Sun will be completely hidden for around 1 minute and 24 seconds.

In València, the totality will be around 1 minute. In Palma, it will reach approximately 1 minute and 36 seconds. In Soria, one of the most favorable points among provincial capitals, the total darkness will be about 1 minute and 42 seconds.

The urban areas of Madrid and Barcelona are outside the band, so in both cities the phenomenon will be seen as a very high magnitude partial eclipse, but there will be no total darkness.

This does not mean that the eclipse will not be spectacular from those cities. The obscuration of the Sun will be very high, but the difference with totality is important: only within the band can the solar corona be seen and the sudden drop in light characteristic of a total eclipse be experienced.

The band crosses Spain from west to east

The shadow of the Moon will enter from the northwest of the peninsula and cross Spain towards the Mediterranean. The path of totality includes areas of Galicia, Asturias, Cantabria, Castilla y León, País Vasco, La Rioja, Navarra, Aragón, Castilla-La Mancha, Cataluña, Comunitat Valenciana and Baleares.

Among the capitals and cities located in the band are A Coruña, Lugo, Oviedo, León, Zamora, Valladolid, Palencia, Segovia, Burgos, Soria, Santander, Bilbao, Vitoria-Gasteiz, Logroño, Guadalajara, Cuenca, Zaragoza, Teruel, Lleida, Tarragona, València, Castelló de la Plana and Palma.

The eclipse will occur at sunset. In Spain, the partial phase will begin around 19:30 hours and totality will arrive approximately between 20:26 and 20:33 hours, depending on the area. The end of the phenomenon will occur later, although in some places the Sun will already be very low or close to the horizon.

This detail is fundamental for choosing a location. It is not enough to be within the path of totality: there must be a clear horizon to the west, because the Sun will be low. Mountains, buildings, trees, or hills can prevent seeing the central moment of the eclipse even in a theoretically well-situated locality.

Why it lasts longer in one city than in another

The duration depends on several astronomical and geographical factors. The most important is the distance of the city to the central line of the path of totality. Near that line, the Moon covers the Sun for a longer time. At the edges, totality can be reduced to just a few seconds.

The position of the Sun over the horizon also influences it. In this eclipse, the phenomenon reaches Spain at the end of the day, so the solar altitude will be low. For this reason, two relatively close points can offer different experiences if one has a clear horizon and the other is blocked by the relief or by buildings.

Not everything is duration: seeing the horizon well matters more

Although some municipalities gain a few seconds of darkness compared to others, the best choice will not always be the place with the longest theoretical duration. In this eclipse, the real visibility will depend a lot on the western horizon, the weather, the access, the capacity, and the safety of the location.

An official or recommended point may be a better option than an isolated place with a few more seconds of totality if it offers better access, parking, services, emergency attention, and a clear view of the Sun.

Certified glasses throughout the entire partial phase

Totality is the only moment in which, within the total band, protection can be removed for a few moments. Before and after that moment, and in all areas where the eclipse is partial, certified glasses for solar observation must be used.

Normal sunglasses do not work. Neither do X-rays, tinted glasses, negatives, CDs, or homemade filters. To look directly at the Sun, certified filters in good condition and suitable for eclipses are needed.

The recommendation for choosing a city

The question should not only be how long the darkness lasts, but from where it will really be seen. Soria, Burgos, Palma, Zaragoza, or A Coruña offer attractive durations, but any travel must be planned in advance and taking into account the weather forecast and the horizon.

The eclipse on August 12 will last little in its total phase, but it will be one of the most important astronomical phenomena seen from Spain in over a century. The difference between seeing it as partial or total can depend on just a few kilometers, and the difference between seeing it well or missing it can depend on something as simple as having the west clear.
