The discovery of the five deceased Italian divers in marine caves in the Maldives has left an element that adds questions to one of the most serious underwater tragedies recorded in the country. The group's instructor, Gianluca Benedetti, was located at a different point than the other four victims, which has fueled doubts about the exact sequence of events within the cave system where the accident occurred.

The incident took place last Thursday, when the group was attempting to explore a network of cavities located at great depth in the Indian Ocean. Local authorities have confirmed that the accident occurred inside a submarine complex that is difficult to access, where visibility, available oxygen, and technical decompression limitations played a decisive role in the outcome.

A rescue conditioned by an extreme environment

The instructor's body was recovered at the entrance of the cave known as Thinwana Kandu, nicknamed the "Shark Cave," at a depth of about 60 meters. However, the rest of the group was located days later in a much more internal area of the system, specifically at the end of a tunnel in the third chamber, where the remaining four divers appeared together, as the Maldivian authorities have detailed.

The government spokesperson explained that the cave structure is formed by three large chambers connected by narrow passages, which would have made orientation and rescue efforts difficult. Initial operations were limited by oxygen conditions and the strict decompression times required for the search teams, who worked in an environment considered to be of maximum risk.

The tragedy was further aggravated by the death of a Maldivian military diver who was participating in the recovery efforts, after suffering a decompression-related accident during the operation.

Investigation opened and repatriation of the instructor

The fact that the instructor was found separated from the rest of the group has added complexity to the investigation, although for the moment the authorities have not presented conclusions about the exact circumstances that led to that distribution of bodies within the cave.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that Gianluca Benedetti's body will be repatriated to Italy on Monday night. The transfer will be made via Istanbul with the final destination being Milan, according to a source linked to the airline in charge of the transport.

The investigation remains open as efforts are made to precisely reconstruct the group's final moments in an underwater scenario described by rescue teams as one of the most complex and dangerous in the region.
