The mayor of Girona, Lluc Salellas (Guanyem Girona), has reiterated that Junts' decision to leave the municipal government is an "error," and has reproached them for acting with electoral logic, thinking about the 2027 municipal elections and being able to position themselves in the opposition.

In a press conference this Tuesday, after Junts' departure was made public, he stressed that "nothing has happened in recent weeks" to justify the departure of Gemma Geis's team from the local executive, and defended the unity of the independence movement that was articulated after the 2023 municipal elections.

According to the mayor, Junts' rupture "gives wings to the PSC and Aliança Catalana in the coming months," and pointed out that this move is bad news for those who advocate for a Catalanist, cohesive city committed to rights.

"This mistake by Junts does not mean that the story ends here. We have a course, we have a government that continues, a determined government," he stated, while calling on ERC to maintain the government agreement in Girona and announcing that they will try to reach agreements with the opposition groups.

NEW ORGANIZATIONAL CHART

Salellas acknowledged the work done by Junts councilors during these 3 years and detailed that they have already begun to develop a new municipal organizational chart, with the intention of being able to "go on vacation" with the areas managed by the Junts councilors reassigned and reorganized.

The mayor avoided delving into the last conversations with Junts, when they informed him that they would leave the government, considering them to be "trivialities," and emphasized that government unity was complex but essential.

He defended that he has exercised his leadership "with generosity," and stressed that any point in the plenary session or the governing board has been previously worked on with the groups, allowing Junts to incorporate their contributions.

"This has been a government that has worked from consensus and cooperation. We are facing a political and calculation error that has to do with municipal elections" in May 2027, he reiterated, insisting that Junts' decision responds to a purely electoral strategy.
