The spokesperson of the PNV in the Congress of Deputies, Maribel Vaquero, has "strongly" condemned the serious "acts of violence" recorded in Bilbao by a group of hooded individuals following the protests against an event by the agitator Vito Quiles, which ultimately did not take place. The jeltzale leader has emphasized that these incidents lack "justification" and "room" in Euskadi, just as those who carry them out do. Likewise, she has called to "not normalize these violent episodes" and has demanded "more democracy against totalitarianism."
Vaquero made these statements during the traditional floral offering of the PNV to Lehendakari José Antonio Aguirre, held next to the statue erected in his memory in the Biscayan capital.
At the tribute, which was also attended by the mayor of Bilbao, Juan Mari Aburto, the president of the EBB, Aitor Esteban, the president of the BBB, Iñigo Ansola, and other institutional and party representatives, the jeltzale spokesperson in the Lower House highlighted that the first Basque Government, whose 90th anniversary is commemorated this year, was the expression of the "will of a people to govern themselves" and to defend "both their rights and their freedoms, even in very difficult circumstances."
In this regard, she indicated that evoking today the figure of Lehendakari Agirre implies "assuming a responsibility, defending his principles against imposition, against violence and intolerance."
For this reason, she reiterated her condemnation of the disturbances that occurred this Monday in Bilbao, when people gathered against the presence of Vito Quiles in the city, who ultimately did not travel to the Biscayan capital, caused significant altercations.
WITHOUT JUSTIFICATION
Maribel Vaquero has stressed that "one cannot confront provocation with more violence." "We cannot normalize these episodes, which have no justification or room, and those who carry them out also have no room," she emphasized.
The jeltzale leader has defended that, in the face of totalitarianism and violence, "more democracy, more freedom, and more political responsibility" are necessary. To conclude, she has highlighted that, in these "so tumultuous" times, against those who seek to "impose their ideas through force," they advocate for "politics, democracy, and centrality."
