The president of Aecoc, Ignacio González, has urged the Government to apply a tax cut, especially demanding the return of zero VAT on basic food products, in light of the rise in inflation, which is affecting the shopping basket and the consumption behavior of Spanish households.
"In the tax cut, I would bring back topics like zero VAT on basic foods, because we need to help the segment that is suffering the most, but also energy. A temporary tax cut can be addressed to protect the consumer," he assured at a press conference after inaugurating the 41st Aecoc Congress of Mass Consumption.
González has pointed out that the sector has accumulated a 29% increase in inflation in recent years. "It's something that worries us, because it's inflation on top of inflation. We see worrying symptoms in consumption and the mass consumption panelists say that last month is worse than the year so far, so there is a certain slowdown and the retail trade index has been negative for three months," he emphasized.
The top official of the mass consumption employers' association has once again focused on the consequences of polarization, which, in his opinion, is "doing a lot of damage." "We don't do politics; as a sector we have to work together, because we are essential for the economic future of the country and it can only be understood without polarization, but the message is also for outside," he indicated.
In relation to the situation in France due to the disturbances and protests in the country, which have led Carrefour to cut its forecasts, González has emphasized that the "social reality of France is different from that of Spain."
"The messages I gave earlier at the inauguration are to prevent Spain from having this kind of thing one day, with sensible migration and a plan for the migrant who comes and integrates. I hope that the episode in France is sporadic and returns to normal," he stressed.
