The hack suffered by Binance, the largest cryptocurrency exchange platform, has raised doubts among its users about what is happening with the money they have deposited and whether they can continue operating normally. The company has estimated the impact of the incident at about 6.3 billion dollars, but maintains that clients' funds are safe and that it will assume the losses.
The main practical consequence for users lies in withdrawals. Binance has temporarily suspended this function, while it completes security checks and reviews the affected system. Deposits have already resumed functioning normally. The forecast conveyed by the company is that they can resume within 48 hours.
Therefore, those who have cryptocurrencies in a Binance account should not confuse the estimated economic impact of the attack with an equivalent loss of their savings. The company assures that clients' assets are protected, although the investigation has still not concluded and its explanations are based on preliminary results.
The platform has also committed to covering all losses derived from the incident with resources from the SAFU protection fund and the company's own funds.
What has happened and why has the hack occurred?
Binance's preliminary investigation points to the incident possibly having started with the compromise of the laptop of an engineer from the DevOps area, the team responsible for development and technical operations. From that device, the attacker would have managed to access a service container and send unauthorized withdrawal transactions.
The company assures that it has revoked the authorization of the affected address and that it is working with law enforcement and with companies specialized in blockchain analysis to trace and recover the funds. It has also collaborated with other participants in the sector to freeze assets linked to the incident.
According to the official update, approximately 3.0 billion dollars in digital assets have been frozen. The estimated total impact stood at about 6.3 billion dollars, a figure that Binance still has to specify as the investigation advances.
What precautions should users take
While the issue is being resolved, Binance recommends consulting only its official channels to learn about the latest news and contacting its customer service if there are doubts about an account or a transaction.
The company also has tools to protect against impersonation attempts. Among them is the anti-phishing code, which allows users to identify authentic email and SMS messages sent by Binance. If the configured code does not appear or does not match, the platform itself warns that it may be a fraud attempt.
Binance also reminds users that its customer service staff do not request passwords, authentication codes, or money transfers to protect an account. For that reason, users should distrust messages that take advantage of the hack to ask them to provide their credentials, download applications, or send their cryptocurrencies to an allegedly secure address.
The company has announced that it will publish a complete technical analysis when the investigation is finished and that it will update its proof of reserves once the corrective measures have been completed. Until then, the main unknown for customers is when the fund withdrawal function will be restored.
