The works committee of Adif in Sevilla has called for a reinforcement of protective measures on the railway network to prevent disasters like the one that occurred in the Toledo town of Urda, where at least 69 people have died from happening again. The request was made after observing a minute of silence in memory of the victims this Thursday at the Sevilla-Santa Justa station.
The event, called by the works committee of Adif together with the union organizations, brought together about 200 people. Among those present were the Minister of Development and Mobility of the Junta de Andalucía, Mario Muñoz; the organization secretary of the Andalusian PP, Antonio Repullo; the general secretary of CCOO Andalucía, Nuria López; the provincial head of CCOO in Sevilla, Carlos Aristu, and the spokesperson for Adelante Andalucía, José Ignacio García.
The manifesto was read by the representative of the works committee, Francisco Ortiz, who explained that they gather "at this moment because of the tragic accident that occurred in Mura, and we convey our condolences to the families of the deceased, as well as all our support and solidarity to the injured and affected people".
During the event, five minutes of silence were also observed "as a sign of respect and tribute", in memory of the victims, "accompanying their loved ones and the entire railway family in their pain".
In his speech, Ortiz detailed the demands of the group, which calls for "the necessary measures to be adopted to prevent a tragedy like this from happening again". He emphasized that "railway safety must always be an absolute priority. We also thank the work of all the professionals who are attending to the emergencies and assisting the victims".
The representative of the committee ended his reading by recalling that "today the entire railway family joins in grief, respect and solidarity. May this tribute serve to remember those who are no longer here, accompany those who suffer and reaffirm our commitment to a railway that is safer every day. Our permanent remembrance for the victims, all our support to their families. Rest in peace".
