The main institutions of Navarra gathered this Thursday in Plaza de la Constitución in Pamplona to express their "deep sorrow" over the railway accident that occurred in Toledo, in which 68 people have lost their lives.
The event, which was attended by parliamentarians from the regional Chamber and councillors of the Government of Navarra, was headed by the president of the Parliament, Unai Hualde, the first vice president of the regional Executive, Javier Remírez, and the Government delegate in Navarra, Alicia Echeverría. The president of the Cámara de Comptos, Ignacio Cabeza, was also present.
In statements to the media, Unai Hualde described the day as a "black Thursday," in which "we are all stricken and very affected" by what happened in Toledo. He indicated that the Board and Council of Spokespersons approved first thing in the morning, unanimously, an institutional declaration to "convey the consternation of the Parliament, of the Government, of society as a whole with what has happened, support for the victims and their families, also for the people who are at the scene." "Today is the day to remember them," he stressed.
On the other hand, Javier Remírez conveyed "all our solidarity and affection both with the victims and with their relatives" and expressed his "wish for a prompt recovery of the injured men and women in this tragic railway accident that occurred in Toledo." He pointed out that the regional Executive has offered the Government of Spain and that of Castilla La Mancha "all the resources that may be necessary both in the management of the emergency and in health matters." Likewise, he recalled that official mourning has been decreed throughout the Comunidad foral until 24 hours on Saturday, October 31, "a mourning that wants to symbolize the solidarity, affection and love of Navarrese society with all those affected and with the whole people of Castilla La Mancha for this tragedy."
The Government delegate in Navarra explained, regarding the possibility that there may be Navarrese citizens among the victims, that "at this moment we have no information either one way or the other." "We do not have information that there are Navarrese who are victims but we cannot rule it out either," she pointed out. Echeverría wanted to recognize the work of "the services that are attending to the emergency" and thanked the Government of Navarra for that "showing and predisposition of solidarity and support."
Institutional declaration of the Parliament of Navarra
At the meeting of the Board and Spokespersons' Board held early in the morning, the foral Parliament unanimously approved an institutional declaration, which was read at the start of this Thursday's plenary session. The text states that the Parliament of Navarra conveys "its condolences and its deepest sorrow and support" to the families and relatives of the people who died in the train accident that occurred in Toledo, as well as its "wish for a speedy recovery" to the injured people.
In addition, the Chamber expresses its "solidarity and support" to all the entities and people who are working in the area of the accident, attending to victims and the injured and "restoring the situation after this brutal catastrophe".
