The next Tuesday, the Congress of Deputies is scheduled to debate an initiative registered by Sumar to promote the construction of a new control tower at Menorca airport, an infrastructure that the party considers essential for the future of the island.
The deputy of Unidas Podemos in the Parliament, José María García, recalled this Friday in a press conference that he had already raised this issue in the regional chamber "on several occasions" and that this same week a non-legislative proposal (PNL) has been approved in this line.
According to the party explained in a statement, the next step will be to transfer the proposal to the Congress of Deputies. Therefore, García has called on the different parliamentary groups to support the initiative to strengthen air, labor, and social security in Menorca.
The current control tower of Menorca airport dates back to 1968 and began operating in 1969. The master plan for Menorca airport from 2009 already included the need to replace it for "not having the adequate dimensions to accommodate both the workstations and the necessary spaces to house new facilities and technical control systems."
Sumar recalls that the local press already reported in 2010 on a project to build a new tower that "was never carried out." Later, in 2014, Aena commissioned the company Incosa to prepare a report on the state of the infrastructure, which indicated that its operational life was between five and ten years. Currently, in 2026, that maximum useful life margin has already been exceeded.
The party also considers it "impossible" that in a short period the remote tower project that Enaire proposed in 2020 for the airports of Vigo and Menorca can be operational, which is why it insists that the solution lies in a new physical tower.
Furthermore, the PNL emphasizes that Aena's investments in the current tower "are nothing but patches" and that the building presents "serious structural problems that worsen day by day," which reinforces the urgency of a comprehensive action.
In its resolving part, the PNL demands that the Government stop the remote tower project, promote the construction of a new physical control tower, and guarantee a sufficient minimum workforce at Menorca airport.
