The authorities of the United States have communicated this Saturday the death of a six-year-old boy and a 35-year-old man after a driver crashed her vehicle into a field during a youth soccer match in Wichita, in the state of Kansas, an incident that has also left several injured.
The woman, a 34-year-old mother whose son was participating in another match at the same facility, entered at high speed with her truck into the Stryker sports complex around 3:25 PM (local time), according to the American network CNN.
As a result of the collision, eleven people were injured, including five minors, although none of them are in critical condition. Both the deceased boy and man have not yet been publicly identified.
The spokesperson for the Wichita Police Department, Aaron Moses, has indicated that the driver remains detained and is cooperating with the officers, while the authorities continue with the investigations and study the possible filing of charges. It has also been specified that at the time of the impact, two minors were traveling in the truck along with the woman.
Moses has confirmed that it is not clear how the "vehicle managed to breach the gate nor at what speed it was traveling." To clarify what happened, investigators have taken statements from more than 30 witnesses and have requested public assistance to locate video recordings from the sports complex.
An eyewitness who was near the scene has reported that the vehicle passed very close to the sideline of the field. "We thought it was going to stop, but it kept going," he emphasized, stressing that the episode "was pure panic."
Given the seriousness of the incident, the Stryker sports complex has decided to suspend all its programming until further notice, according to the organization itself in a public statement. "We ask that you keep all the people and families affected in your thoughts and prayers during this difficult time."
