The authorities of Indonesia have communicated this Friday the detection of an earthquake of magnitude 6.2 on the Richter scale in the Banda Sea, south of the Moluccas Islands, in the eastern zone of the Asian country, and have indicated that no tsunami alert has been activated.
In an official note, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG, for its initials in Indonesian) has specified that the tremor occurred at 18:56 hours (local time), with an epicenter in waters located about 162 kilometers southwest of the Moluccas and at just over 140 kilometers deep.
For now, the authorities have not reported material damage or casualties, although they have asked residents to remain calm in the face of the possibility of new tremors and to stay away from buildings or infrastructures that show cracks or deterioration caused by the seismic movement.
Indonesia, an extensive archipelago situated on the Pacific Ring of Fire, is one of the regions of the planet with the highest seismic and volcanic activity, and in this strip, around 90% of the earthquakes recorded in the world are concentrated.
