At least 17 Christians from Mikindani, in Mombasa, have lost their lives in a serious traffic accident recorded on the Nairobi-Mombasa highway, at the height of Makueni County, while traveling to the National Sanctuary of Subukia. In addition, several people have been injured and are being treated in health centers.
The victims were part of the community of faithful from the Catholic parish of San Matías Mulumba, in Mikindani (Mombasa), and were traveling to Subukia, in Nakuru County, to participate in the National Day of Prayer, according to the Archdiocese of Mombasa.
"With deep sorrow we announce the premature death of 17 pilgrims from San Matías Mulumba, Mikindani, in an accident that occurred in Salama," explained Archbishop Kimengich in a statement reported by Kenyan media.
The deceased are Janet Miito, Florence Atieno, Jane Mwakamba, Josephat Mekonge, Hilkah Orina, Linah Akinyi, Veronicah Musyimi, Martha Nzyoki, Ann Mwanthi, Sarapia Mwarimbo, Scholastica Ochieng, Catherine Joseph, Beatrice Oluoch, Veronica Ngandi, Regina Mwai, Samuel Muigai, and Samuel Mwanyasi.
The Archdiocese of Mombasa has requested prayers for the repose of the souls of the deceased, as well as for the comfort of their families, for the parish, and for the entire Archdiocese.
