The Canadian Prime Minister, Mark Carney, and the French President, Emmanuel Macron, met this Sunday in Saint Pierre and Miquelon, taking advantage of the official visit of the head of the Canadian Government to the archipelago. The meeting focused on security, the economy, energy, defense, and technological cooperation between both States.
Carney and Macron emphasized the strength of the historical ties that unite Canada and France and agreed on the convenience of deepening their collaboration in an international context marked by increasing fragmentation and new challenges for security.
In this regard, the two leaders set common goals to strengthen the resilience capacity of their societies and bolster prosperity and security on both sides of the Atlantic, according to a statement released by the office of the Canadian Prime Minister after the meeting.
During the dialogue, both leaders also analyzed the potential for a future partnership between Canada and the European Union, aimed at increasing the collective capacity to face crises and threats. This proposal would be based on shared values and the sum of the strategic capabilities of Canada and European countries to promote both sovereignty and economic growth.
Cooperation in key sectors
Among the commitments reached is a boost to cooperation in the space sector. Carney and Macron have tasked their space agencies, their defense departments, and the industry to collaborate in the development and shared use of infrastructure, including launch systems and ground equipment for reception and control.
In this framework, they highlighted the collaboration opportunities between Canadian, French, and European companies.
The economic chapter also had a significant weight in the meeting, where both leaders celebrated the creation of a new strategic alliance promoted by the Canadian Chamber of Commerce and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry of France (CCI France). This initiative seeks to strengthen business ties, expand bilateral economic cooperation, and promote greater diversification of trade exchanges.
The shared agenda will also expand to other areas considered strategic, such as defense, the aerospace industry, or the prevention and response to wildfires.
Energy, AI, and emerging technologies
On the international stage, Carney and Macron have addressed the war in Ukraine, the security of Europe and the transatlantic space, the situation in the Middle East, and issues related to the Arctic. They have also assessed the impact of conflicts on energy supply and have agreed to strengthen bilateral coordination on energy security.
This intensification of energy cooperation will occur while Canada accelerates its plans to develop its resources in both clean and conventional energies, with the aim of fully harnessing its potential on both fronts.
Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies have also featured prominently in the meeting.
Following the discussions held during the G7 Leaders' Summit in Évian, France, both leaders have advocated for greater cooperation among countries at the forefront of artificial intelligence, including Canada and France. In this regard, Carney has highlighted Canada's willingness to act as a reliable partner in the responsible development of new technologies.
The visit has had a historic character as it is the first time a Canadian prime minister has made an official trip to Saint Pierre and Miquelon.
In this context, Carney and Macron have emphasized the historical, personal, cultural, and economic ties that unite the French archipelago with the communities of the Atlantic region of Canada. At the same time, they have urged the Joint Regional Cooperation Commission to expand its work on four axes: economic integration and trade diversification; energy transition and decarbonization; adaptation and resilience to climate change, along with early warning systems; and border security.
The day also included a commemorative ceremony for the incorporation of Saint Pierre and Miquelon into Free France in 1941, in which Carney and Macron paid tribute to those who defended freedom and democracy at that time, values that, according to the note from the Canadian government, remain an essential part of the ties between Canada and France.
The presence of both leaders in the archipelago has also served to underline their geopolitical relevance. Canada has reaffirmed its sovereignty and that of this Franco-North American territory, whose location makes France a neighboring country of Canada and gives Saint Pierre and Miquelon a strategic position as a connection point between Canada and Europe.
At the close of the meeting, Carney and Macron have agreed to maintain close contact and continue their conversations in New York in the coming days, coinciding with the celebration of the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.
