The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) announced this Saturday a temporary and localized ceasefire in the surroundings of the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, with the aim of facilitating the repair of one of the power lines that supply the facilities.
The measure comes after a prolonged supply cut caused by the cross-attacks between Russia and Ukraine, which have kept the area under a situation of special risk since the beginning of the war.
Work in a high-risk area
The interruption of the power line has forced the establishment of this pause in hostilities so that the teams responsible for the repairs can work in safe conditions.
The electrical supply is essential to keep the safety systems of the plant operational, even though its reactors are not currently operating at full capacity.
The IAEA has closely monitored the situation of the plant, considered one of the main nuclear infrastructures at risk as a consequence of the war.
The plant, at the center of the war
The Zaporiyia plant, the largest nuclear facility in Europe, has been under Russian control since March 2022, although Ukraine continues to demand its return.
The clashes in its surroundings and the damage recorded in the energy infrastructures have generated repeated international warnings about the risks to nuclear safety.
The Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, has insisted on various occasions on the need to avoid any action that could compromise the essential systems of the plant.
A limited agreement for repairs
The announced ceasefire does not imply a general agreement between Moscow and Kiev, but rather a limited pause linked exclusively to the repair work of the electrical infrastructure.
The measure aims to create a safety window for technicians to restore the supply and reduce the risks arising from the energy situation of the plant. The IAEA will continue to monitor the progress of the work and the security situation around the facilities.
