Just weeks away from the celebration of three decisive regional elections in Germany, a demographic study conducted by INSA reveals that the conservative bloc is going through its worst moment at the federal level since 2021.
In its weekly barometer for the Sunday newspaper "Bild am Sonntag", the conservative alliance made up of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and its sister party in Bavaria, the Christian Social Union (CSU), is left with just 20% electoral support.
According to the newspaper, this percentage constitutes the lowest record that INSA has granted to the conservatives since October 2021 and represents a decline of one percentage point compared to the previous week.
The far-right party Alternative for Germany (AfD) continues to lead with 28%, while the Greens remain unchanged at 13%. Meanwhile, the Social Democrats and The Left (Die Linke) both stand at 12% in voting intention.
As in the previous survey, the Free Democratic Party (FDP) would manage to exceed the minimum threshold to access Parliament with 5% if the elections were to take place this Sunday. In contrast, the Sahra Wagenknecht Alliance would again fall below that barrier, with 3% of the votes.
In September, three regional electoral events will be held. Saxony-Anhalt will open the calendar on September 6, followed by Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and Berlin on September 20. Historical marks are forecasted for the AfD in all of them. In Saxony-Anhalt, the party could even reach an unprecedented absolute majority, allowing it to participate for the first time in a regional executive.
For this survey, INSA interviewed 1,203 citizens between August 10 and 14. The institute has set the margin of error at plus/minus 3.1 percentage points.
