French President Emmanuel Macron stated this Wednesday that the recent G7 summit has certified the return of the United States to the common line on the war in Ukraine. In his opinion, US President Donald Trump has accepted that Russia shows no real intention of ending the conflict and, on the contrary, has supported maintaining and reinforcing military support for Kyiv.
"What allowed us to channel all the conversations was, fundamentally, a resynchronization, a reconvergence, and a cooperation of everyone in our approach to Ukraine and in the principles set out in our common text. And that is something very positive," the French leader said at a press conference at the close of the meeting of leaders of the world's major powers held in Évian, France.
Macron explained that the US president himself has come to the conclusion that Moscow refuses to open a "sincere discussion" to stop the war and that there is an "impossibility of moving forward on negotiation bases that are not acceptable." He also stressed that the group has reiterated its support for Ukraine's territorial integrity, which is interpreted as a rejection of any formula that involves forcing Kyiv to give up part of its territory.
"President Trump, like all of us, simply noted that there was no serious will on the part of Russia," he said, avoiding commenting on whether the meeting marks a turning point, although he did admit that Ukraine is going through a "decisive moment." In this context, he stressed that the G7 members have reaffirmed their commitment to intensify aid to Kyiv and increase pressure on Russia.
"We all stated that we must maintain this course. That is indeed a real change compared to recent months. Not on the part of the Europeans, but on the part of the G7 members and all those who are precisely called upon to support Ukraine," summarized the head of the Élysée.
In the final conclusions of the summit, the G7 leaders agreed to "increase pressure" on the "Russian war economy" by tightening sanctions on gas and oil from Moscow. This step represents a change from Washington's previous stance, which had resisted directly naming Russia in a G7 declaration on the third anniversary of the invasion in 2025, a disagreement that had opened rifts in the bloc.
