The president of Mexico, Claudia Sheinbaum, has confirmed that she accepts the resignation of the head of the National Electoral Institute (INE), Guadalupe Taddei, although she has emphasized that the complaints filed against her for an alleged conflict of interest and for irregular public contract awards must be clarified.
In her appearance this Monday before the media, Sheinbaum described Taddei's step taken this Sunday as a "good decision," although she insisted that "an investigation must be done" and "there must be an audit to see the suspicions, abuses, or privileges."
"There can be no shadow of corruption in the INE and the audit must be done," the president emphasized, who at the same time condemned the "machista mockery" directed against Taddei in recent hours, especially on social media. "One cannot applaud a lynching of a person," she added.
Sheinbaum stressed that "a part of all these criticisms of someone's personal life and for being a woman is not correct (...) If there is mismanagement of resources, let it be investigated, but this mockery of a woman is not right," referring to the videos and images of Taddei that have been widely circulated to question her private life and damage her reputation.
Taddei announced that this Monday she would formalize her resignation before the Chamber of Deputies, the body responsible for appointments in the INE, following journalistic publications about alleged anomalies in her administration, including a scheme of million-dollar awards that links a business conglomerate with people from her close circle in the electoral body and former collaborators.
