At least six alleged members of the armed jihadist organization "Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters" (BIFF, for its acronym in English) have died this Saturday in a clash with Philippine security forces in Tugunan, within the Muslim autonomous region of Bangsamoro, in the south of the country.
The exchange of gunfire occurred as part of a joint operation by the Army and the Philippine Police aimed at executing an arrest warrant against a fugitive known by the alias "Zoren," who is attributed with several vehicle thefts resulting in homicide.
According to the version provided by the authorities and cited by the newspaper "Manila Bulletin," the agents and military were met with gunfire as they approached the indicated location in the town of Balong, which triggered the subsequent armed confrontation.
After the clash, there was an intense shootout in which six alleged members of the "Bangsamoro Freedom Fighters" -- an armed jihadist organization active mainly in the Mindanao region, in the south of the Philippines -- lost their lives, and several high-caliber weapons were seized, including four M16 rifles and a Garand rifle.
So far, the Army and the Police have not confirmed the identity of the deceased. However, local authorities have indicated that the operation forced the temporary displacement of around 350 residents to evacuation centers, and have linked the armed group to drug trafficking and theft activities in the area.
The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) does not constitute an independent State, but is configured as a territorial entity with a broad self-government regime within the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Philippines.
This autonomy framework ended decades of conflict with the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF, for its acronym in English), although clashes with various jihadist and Islamist groups that aspire to establish a fully independent and sovereign Islamic State, governed by a strict interpretation of Islamic law (sharia) in the island of Mindanao and in the adjacent southern islands of the Philippines, persist.
