Spain has expressed this Sunday its strong condemnation of the attacks launched in the last hours by the Houthi insurgents of Yemen against Saudi territory, as well as against civilian infrastructure and merchant ships of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
These incidents occur amid a resurgence of violence recorded this week between the Yemeni government and the Houthi militia. In this context, the rebels attacked this Sunday a refinery of the Saudi oil giant Aramco in the city of Jizan, a port in the southwest of Saudi Arabia, near the border with Yemen, where a fire has been declared.
However, the most serious episode took place last Thursday, when an airstrike on the Saudi town of Najran, in the south of the country, left eleven civilians injured.
The Houthis, aligned with Iran, blame Saudi Arabia for supporting the Yemeni Executive, established in the city of Aden since the insurgents took control of the capital, Sana'a, more than a decade ago, initiating a devastating civil war. Since then, the rebels recall, the Saudi aviation has carried out numerous bombings on Yemeni territory.
"Our deepest solidarity with the Saudi government and people, and wish for a speedy recovery for the injured," stated the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation in a statement released on social media.
Likewise, Spain demands the immediate cessation of violations against the territorial integrity and sovereignty of Saudi Arabia and urges to avoid a new "escalation" that "hinders a negotiated and lasting solution in the region."
