The Colombian authorities have updated this Thursday the balance of the earthquake of magnitude 7.4 on the Richter scale recorded at the beginning of this week in the northwest of the country, placing the number of deceased at 273 and the injured at more than 3,800.
The director of the National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD), David Tamayo, has detailed in a press conference that there are 273 fatalities and that the remains of 250 of them are at the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences.
According to Tamayo, this agency has managed to identify 227 bodies, of which 184 have already been handed over to their families.
During his speech, the head of the UNGRD has estimated the total number of injured people at 3,824, while the figure of 377 missing persons remains three days after the earthquake.
In addition, he has reported that there are 40,753 affected families, which means 97,515 people, and that 12,584 destroyed homes have been counted, as well as damages in another 74,873, in 2,198 educational centers, 216 health facilities, and five airports.
The figures released are still provisional, as emergency teams continue search and rescue efforts among the rubble in the areas most affected by the earthquake, including the cities of Cali, Pereira, Quibdó, and Manizales.
