The member states of the European Union have given the green light this Monday to the launch of 4.9 billion euros from the European Peace Facility, with the aim of funding new military assistance to Ukraine. Of this amount, 4.7 billion will be used to partially reimburse the Twenty-Seven for the weapons and military material already sent to Kiev, while another 230 million will be directed to strengthen the training of Ukrainian forces.
This has been communicated by the Council (the governments) in an official note, in which it specifies that the Twenty-Seven have approved a total of eight decisions to activate these resources, in application of the political agreement reached on September 25 to channel 6.6 billion euros to Ukraine through this European military financing instrument.
In practice, most of the funds validated this Monday will be allocated to partially compensate EU countries for the military support already provided to the Ukrainian Armed Forces, while the remaining 230 million will serve to fund the EU Military Assistance Mission in support of Ukraine (EUMAM Ukraine), responsible for the training of Ukrainian soldiers.
The political pact reached in September also includes the provision of another 1 billion euros in new military aid for Kiev, in addition to an additional reinforcement of the European military training mission during 2027.
Following the decisions made this Monday, the total support of the European Union to Ukraine through the European Peace Facility now amounts to 10.8 billion euros, of which 9.9 billion corresponds to the reimbursement of military assistance provided by the member states and another 950 million to the training of Ukrainian military personnel.
