The Inter-American Commission on Human Rights (IACHR) has urged the Executive of Venezuela to fulfill its duty to safeguard the security and political rights of opposition member María Corina Machado, who returned to the country on Sunday after spending several months abroad.

In a statement, the organization has noted that "The IACHR continues to monitor her situation and reminds the State of its obligation to adopt the necessary measures to guarantee her rights to life and personal integrity, as well as the full exercise of her political rights, free from threats, harassment, or acts of violence."

The inter-American institution has also reiterated to the Venezuelan authorities that "the respect for human rights, political pluralism, and fundamental freedoms are essential conditions for strengthening democracy in the country."

In this context, the IACHR has also expressed its willingness to make an official visit to Venezuela, in response to the request made by the Venezuelan State itself.

Machado returned this Sunday to Venezuelan territory after being outside the country for several months. She left in December 2025 heading to Oslo to attend the Nobel Peace Prize award ceremony, an award that was ultimately collected by her daughter, Ana Corina Sosa. Upon her arrival, the opposition leader spread a message on social media confirming her presence in Venezuela: "I am here. With you," while her party, Vente Venezuela, organized a "national caravan" to celebrate her return.

At the same time, the opposition presidential candidate Edmundo González, who ran against Nicolás Maduro in the elections of July 2024, has announced that he will return "soon" to the country.

The return of the opposition leader takes place in a context of rapprochement between the de facto authorities of Caracas and Washington following the U.S. military incursion on January 3, in which Nicolás Maduro was captured, currently being tried in New York, which led then-Vice President Delcy Rodríguez to assume power.
