The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) has stated this Tuesday that the authorities of Iran maintain obstacles to the access of international inspectors to their nuclear complexes, in a context marked by the resumption of attacks between the United States and the Islamic Republic and the blockage of negotiations, in which the Iranian atomic program remains a central element.
"The lack of information from the agency about this nuclear material and access to the facilities to verify it is a cause for concern regarding proliferation," wrote the Director General of the IAEA, Rafael Grossi, in a restricted document distributed this Tuesday in Vienna, reported by the Bloomberg agency, in which he demands that Iran must allow access for inspectors "with the utmost urgency."
The Argentine official has insisted on his request to Tehran to allow the agency's teams to fully resume their verification work and has appealed for a negotiated solution to the standoff with Washington, while the IAEA Board of Governors will meet next week in Vienna to discuss a possible new resolution of censure against the Islamic Republic.
The monitoring tasks of the UN nuclear agency in the country were reduced by more than half last year, after Iran imposed new limitations following the 12-day war in which Israel and the United States bombed its nuclear facilities.
Since then, inspectors have not been able to return to the damaged facilities of Fordow, Isfahan, and Natanz, although, according to the IAEA, a visit by observers to the Bushehr nuclear power plant will be authorized in mid-September.
The agency's formal complaint about the obstacles to monitoring the Iranian nuclear program occurs in parallel to a new spike in hostilities between the United States, which has carried out more bombings in recent hours, and the Islamic Republic, which has responded by attacking American targets in the Middle East.
