The United States ambassador to Turkey, Tom Barrack, praised this Tuesday the "absolutely historic" dissolution of the Kurdish-Arab Syrian Democratic Forces (SDF), framed in the integration agreement sealed at the end of January with the Syrian transitional president, Ahmed al Shara, a step that, in his words, "allows a firm partner to integrate into a national framework."
"Absolutely historic. The President of the United States (Donald Trump's) Plan for the Middle East allows a firm partner to integrate into a national framework, and thus a united Syria for all is forged," Barrack pointed out in a message shared on social media.
In that same publication, the U.S. representative praised Trump's "visionary leadership" for "paving the way for the orderly integration of the Syrian Democratic Forces into the Syrian state institutions, transforming the divisions of the past into a lasting alliance and giving the Syrian people the opportunity to build their common future."
The ambassador also emphasized "the recognition of the Kurdish language in education," a demand that the commander of the SDF, Mazloum Abdi, had put on the table when informing hours before the dissolution of the militia.
Similarly, Barrack highlighted "the assignment of substantial roles to our valuable partners Mazloum Abdi and Ilham Ahmad (senior official of the Autonomous Democratic Administration of North and East Syria, AANES) within the Syrian government," a decision that, he said, "pays due tribute to their leadership, to the sacrifices of our Kurdish partners, and to the constructive contribution they have made to regional stability."
"This is what true integration looks like: there are no winners or losers, but former partners with different viewpoints crafting a diplomatic solution to strengthen the sovereign nation of Syria," added the United States ambassador, who closed his message with the slogan "One Army, One Government, One State."
The fourteen-point agreement reached in January —with Washington's mediation— contemplated the presence of Kurdish leaders at the head of various positions, although to date, the incorporation into Al Shara's Executive of officials from the parallel regional administration has not been officially confirmed.
Nevertheless, the Kurdish news agency Hawar has indicated, citing its own sources, that Damascus would have proposed that Abdi be appointed advisor on Kurdish affairs in the Syrian Presidency and that Ahmed take a high-ranking position within the Syrian transitional government.
