Ada Colau, candidate of Frente Amplio for the presidency of the Government in the general elections on November 29, has launched a direct message to the Podemos candidate, Irene Montero, asking her to choose between the series "Game of Thrones" or "Friends". She did so after the failure of negotiations between the purple formation and the other 15 organizations that have decided to run together under the umbrella of Frente Amplio.
"I would simply ask her to choose between two options. Game of Thrones or Friends?", she asked in an interview on 'El perro andaluz', reported by Europa Press, where Colau was requested to leave a recorded question for the Podemos candidate.
Colau explained the background of her question, recalling that "We were talking about ways of understanding power, right?", thus linking the example of the series with the discussion about leadership models and alliance building. She took the opportunity to emphasize that Frente Amplio "has not failed" in its attempt to articulate a united candidacy to the left of the PSOE.
"I believe that the 15 formations that we have promoted from Frente Amplio have made it clear that we want to go together and achieve the maximum result to continue transforming this country," she reiterated, before launching a jab at those who have stayed out of the pact: "Some have wanted to go alone, let them respond."
During the interview, Colau participated in a game in which she had to associate capital sins with different leaders. She assigned "gluttony" to Gabriel Rufián for having put "honey on the lips for more than a year talking and talking and promising the unity of the left and in the end went to dinner alone," referring to the expectations created and ultimately frustrated about a joint list.
In the same exercise, she attributed "exhibitionism" to Pablo Iglesias, former leader of Podemos, for "how he has been explaining that he would not enter Frente Amplio." Regarding the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, she attributed "laziness" to him for considering that "there is no way" for the PSOE to legislate "on housing" despite having promised it repeatedly.
Sánchez and the measures of Sumar
At another moment in the conversation, Colau reacted to Pedro Sánchez's interview on the program 'La Revuelta' of TVE. According to the candidate, the head of the Executive ended up asking for the vote for Frente Amplio "unintentionally," by favorably highlighting four policies promoted by Sumar ministries: the "increases in the SMI," the "Labor reform," the "fixed hiring," and the "housing decrees."
The leader of Frente Amplio has claimed the social mobilizations in defense of the right to housing and has encouraged the progressive electorate to maintain pressure on the streets. She pointed out that her decision to return to the political front line was greatly marked by the demand for "unity" that, she said, was conveyed to her by numerous leftist voters.
Offers to return to the front line
In this context, Colau revealed that, before accepting to lead the Frente Amplio candidacy, she received several proposals to return to institutional politics that she ultimately rejected. Among them, she mentioned that she was offered to be a minister in the current Government after the general elections of July 2023, an option that she decided to discard at that moment.
