The mayor of Madrid, José Luis Martínez-Almeida, warned this Thursday that in the general elections on next November 29 the future of Spanish democracy will be decided, considering that the PSOE led by Pedro Sánchez acts as a "dissolving force" of the constitutional regime endorsed by Spaniards in 1978.
"On November 29, the great challenge we all Spaniards face is to defeat the dissolving forces of the constitutional regime of 1978," Almeida stated during an informative breakfast organized by Europa Press, where he focused his speech on the political impact of the upcoming trip to the polls.
In addition to referring to the pro-independence formations, the Madrid mayor expressly included the PSOE among those "dissolving" forces. "It is that whoever is truly dissolving of the regime of '78 without a doubt is the Socialist Party and Pedro Sánchez," he stressed, insisting that the current socialist project calls into question the consensus arising from the Transition.
In this context, he underscored the significance of the general elections on November 29, which, in his view, go beyond a simple political alternation. "Democratic alternation now, on November 29, is more important and more urgent than ever, because what we are risking is democracy as we have known it since 1978," the mayor concluded.
Places the PP as a "useful instrument" against "sanchismo"
In view of that election day, Martínez-Almeida defended that, in the face of the call to the polls, "one should not appeal to the useful vote, one should appeal to the useful instrument" and that, in his opinion, that role is embodied by the Partido Popular, which he presented as the option capable of "dismantling sanchismo".
"When I talk about the useful instrument, I am talking about that party that no longer aspires only to be everything that is to the right of the Socialist Party, José María Aznar's great merit at the time, but rather what we aspire to is to be the common umbrella for all those who want to recover the bases of coexistence," he explained, claiming a PP that brings together voters who wish to return to the spirit of constitutional consensus.
