The Minister of Youth and Childhood, Sira Rego, has reiterated that she considers it "unlikely" that Morocco "knew nothing about the movement of more than 80,000 people" who ultimately crossed irregularly into Ceuta at the end of July. At the same time, she has asked the European Union to "reflect" on its current migratory approach, warning that "Externalizing and militarizing borders generates this type of serious problems."
"I continue to hold the same position I have held since minute one," she stated in remarks to the media this Wednesday, after an institutional visit to Sagunt (Valencia). This is how she responded when asked about the statements of the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, who from New York has described as "evident" that Morocco's control of the border "failed" during the massive entry on July 30 and has indicated that he has demanded "actions and responses."
In the minister's opinion, "when many people who want to migrate do not have the possibility of having a legal and safe route, this type of phenomenon occurs." Following that, she also emphasized the "political responsibility": "These things are voted on, in institutions, in parliaments, as is the case with the European ones. The policy of renting the border to Morocco was voted on in the European Parliament."
In this context, she has highlighted that formations like Sumar have positioned themselves against "externalizing the border to Morocco," while reproaching that the PP and other forces "always vote in favor of having a third country manage the external border of the European Union." "What has happened, therefore, is a direct consequence of this migratory policy," she maintained.
And she emphasized: "Perhaps now, if we want to be supportive of Ceuta, which I believe is necessary, we should also reflect deeply on this issue, and on how to lend a hand to decongest the situation in Ceuta."
