The Plenary of Congress rejected this Thursday the non-legislative proposal registered by the PSOE with which it intended for the leader of the PP, Alberto Núñez Feijóo, to make all his income public and clarify how he pays for the apartment in which he resides with his family in Madrid. The initiative has been halted thanks to the votes of PP, Vox, PNV, and UPN, to which the abstentions of Junts and CC have been added, while Sumar, ERC, Bildu, Podemos, Compromís, and BNG have supported the socialist proposal.
As a deputy in Congress, Feijóo already stated upon taking possession of his seat his assets, the remuneration received in the last fiscal year, and his economic interests. However, the PSOE sought to expand that obligation and for the head of the opposition to provide more detailed information about the totality of his income and remuneration, both in cash and in kind.
The origin of this parliamentary offensive is situated in the 'face to face' held on June 24 between the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, and Feijóo, when the head of the Executive urged the leader of the PP to reveal how much he or his party pays for the rent of his home in the Madrid neighborhood of El Viso, to which the popular leader responded that he finances his house together with the mother of his child.
After that confrontation, the Socialist Group registered a non-legislative proposal explicitly referring to Feijóo to specify in his declaration of assets and activities how the housing in which he lives with his family in Madrid is financed.
The PSOE was forced to reformulate the initiative
However, the Table of Congress forced the socialists to redo the text for addressing a specific person directly, with names and surnames, for entering into a competition proper to the governing body of the Chamber, and for proposing a control mechanism over the opposition.
In the modified version, which is the one that has been discussed and submitted to a vote in the Plenary this Thursday, the PSOE removed all explicit mentions of Feijóo and the financing of his housing, and proposed that the head of the opposition must declare his assets and the totality of the remuneration in money or in kind that he receives, in addition to donations and economic interests.
At the same time, the socialists proposed to promote regulatory changes so that all deputies detail in their declarations of assets, activities, and economic interests all the information related to their wealth, income or in-kind remuneration, donations, activities, and economic interests, thus fully complying with the Congress Regulations and the Code of Conduct of the General Courts.
