The volume of passengers arriving in Spain from Italy who have been subjected to documentation checks at Spanish airports since last Saturday exceeds 2,600 people, according to the latest data provided by the Ministry of the Interior.
Specifically, by one o'clock in the afternoon this Wednesday, the number of travelers who have been required to show documentation upon entering Spanish territory stood at 2,682. During this period, 218 flights have been monitored and 372 agents have been involved in the operation.
In the last 24 hours, 539 passengers have gone through this control. The majority of them, 146, have landed on four flights at Adolfo Suárez-Madrid Barajas Airport. At the Barcelona airport of El Prat, the identification of 70 nationals from third countries coming from seven different flights has been carried out.
A similar situation has occurred in Valencia, where 14 travelers from the same flight have had to show their documentation. In Bilbao, checks on passengers from two planes have resulted in a dozen identifications, while in Málaga, four have been recorded, all belonging to the same flight.
Among the island airports, Mallorca is the one that has concentrated the most checks, with five passengers identified on a single plane. In the Canary Islands, the breakdown is as follows: four identifications at Lanzarote airport, spread over two flights; three at Tenerife Sur, coming from ten planes, and two more in Fuerteventura, all from a single flight. At Gran Canaria airport, one aircraft was inspected, but it was not necessary to identify any passengers.
Temporary controls until September 7
The temporary re-establishment of border controls at airports and ports that maintain direct connections between the Kingdom of Spain and the Italian Republic was implemented on Saturday, August 8.
The Government has decided to maintain these controls until next September 7, awaiting Italy to lift the suspension of the Schengen area to Spain that was adopted after the migratory crisis registered in Ceuta on July 30.
